Routines and Rituals

Routines are really important for young tamariki—they help create a sense of security and make the day feel calm and predictable. When children know what’s coming next, they feel safe and more confident to explore and learn.

At Deb’s Place, our nursery follows each child’s individual rhythm, embracing the RIE philosophy which respects tamariki’s natural pace and needs. This gentle approach helps infants and young children feel secure and supported as they grow. Once children move into the preschool, we begin to introduce routines that are woven into the daily rhythm. We start with a whānau morning hui to connect, have group times focusing on different learning goals, and regular mat times where tamariki practice listening and sharing.

These routines help children understand time and the flow of their day, so they can even start to predict when it’s time to go home! Having routines also encourages independence with simple tasks like washing hands and tidying up, while supporting wellbeing and learning.

For whānau, keeping routines consistent at home and preschool helps tamariki feel settled and ready to grow. In short, routines aren’t just about sticking to a schedule—they help tamariki feel safe, confident, and excited to learn every day!
